Eighth-grader helps cancer patients ‘one cap at a time’

Readers Views

Commonwealth Journal

Brittany Ferrell, an eighth-grade student at Northern Middle School, is helping cancer patients along through cancer journey one cap at a time.

Ferrell is a member of the Community Problem Solving Team at Northern Middle School.

Her individual project this year was to help cancer patients that are undergoing chemo-therapy to cope with their hair loss.

Brittany, with the help of family members and Knit-Wits at First Presbyterian Church, have been knitting and crocheting caps for cancer patients.

In addition, she has pink breast cancer rubber bracelets available for a donation to the American Cancer Society.

Brittany took her passion to help others one step further by printing up pink polo shirts with “Caps for Cancer” on it and raised over $300 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event.

Brittany will be competing on May 27 at the International Future Problem Solvers con-ference at Michigan State University. She will be presenting her project “Caps For Cancer” in the competition.

Brooke Cary, community representative for the American Cancer Society, said, “I am truly touched that Brittany has the compassion to help cancer patients. This goes to show that if a middle school student can help the lives of patients – anyone can. The American Cancer Society is so proud of Brittany and truly appreciates all that she is doing in our fight against cancer.”

If you would like to make a monetary donation or donate materials/supplies for “Caps For Cancer,” please contact Brittany Ferrell at 606-416-1423
