Graphic design classes are available online

Somerset — Online graphic design instruction is now available through Somerset Commu-nity College.

The Visual Communication program at SCC is offering 11 online courses that provide instruction in the use of specific graphics computer programs and design theory.

“We want to make learning the new graphic design tech-nology as accessible as possi-ble,” said Program Coordi-nator Stuart Simpson. “Many of our students have asked us to go completely online because they’re at work dur-ing the day and because of the rising cost of gas.”

Simpson said that online courses offered through the program provide the same quality instruction that stu-dents receive in the class-room. Even though the classes are available 24-7 over the Internet, Instruc-tional Specialist Cindy Burton provides one-on-one, personalized instruction.

“These are accredited college classes that utilize the latest technology,” Burton said. She noted that training is available for Adobe com-puter programs Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Acrobat.

Simpson pointed out that students can sign up to take just one or two classes or can enroll in the program to earn certificates, degree or diploma.

Students who want more than a class or two would need to declare a “program of study” at the college. They could then earn certificates in Digital Imaging Assistant, Digital Production Assistant, Web Design and Animation. A Digital Production Artist Diploma is also available as is an associate in Applied Science degree in general occupational studies.

While access to the Adobe computer program being studied is required, Simpson noted that the software is available to students at all Somerset Community College campuses and centers.

“Also, many of our students use Adobe programs as part of their work,” he said. “So they would already have access to the software.”

Fall semester classes begin in August and the spring semester classes begin in January. The cost is $405 for each three-credit hour college class.
