Firefighters have tough battle with Sunday blaze

Somerset —

A fire in southern Pulaski County on Sunday morning proved a harrowing battle for firefighters in the recent oppressive heat.
According to Jim Howard, chief of the Tateville Volunteer Fire Department, the structure located at 925 Coomer Road was a total loss after the blaze, which is still under investigation.
Located off U.S. 27, shortly south of the entrance to General Burnside Island, the building served as a garage for Justin Hall, who, according to Howard, built and raced mini-four wheelers, and fueled them and did testing on them there at the garage.
Howard said there was a large mobile home unit next to the garage that had to be moved before firefighters could go to work, as it was blocking the scene.
The challenges didn’t stop there. Battling a blaze in 80-degree weather, the heat proved oppressive. Howard said that one of the Tateville firefighters was overcome with heat exhaustion and was sent to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital for treatment.
Firefighters arrived at a little after 8 a.m. Sunday and stayed on the scene until about 1:30 p.m.
Hall was not present at the time, having gone to Florida, according to Howard. Hall’s brother, with whom he works on the four-wheelers, was also out of town.
The cause of the fire is as of yet unknown. When asked if an electrical fire was a possibility, Howard noted that there was a large exhaust fan present as well as some chargers, but couldn’t confirm anything.
Howard said that some of the furniture in the building’s office, including a large desk, was able to be saved, but the rest of the facility was a loss.
The Burnside, Bronston, and Parkers Mill  fire departments also responded to the scene.
