It is widely said and accepted that defense wins championships.

Well, you can chalk up yet another win that proves that saying, but you can also add an asterisk to this one.

The asterisk being that in the 48th district tournament the Southwestern Lady Warriors supplied superb defense, but paired with it an offense that left little doubt.

Last night at McCreary Central High School the Lady Warriors, the county’s last hope for a district title in baseball or softball, took on the Wayne County Lady Cardinals in the championship game of the 48th district tournament.

Behind a second-straight spectacular effort from the circle by Shelby Kosmecki coupled with an errorless defense for the second game in a row along with seven runs off of 11 hits, Southwestern captured the 48th district championship with a 7-0 win over Wayne County.

“Wayne County played well,” Southwestern head coach Jim Woodall said. “We finally got the clutch hits that we needed. The hard work has paid off, and we are playing good ball. We beat a good team tonight.”

In a rematch of last season’s culminating contest for the district the Lady Cardinals and the Lady Warriors would hook up, and, like last year, Southwestern systematically dismantled Wayne County.

Kosmecki delivered another shutout in the tournament, having pitched a no-hit, shutout against Monticello in the opening round, while only allowing three hits against the Lady Cardinals. Kosmecki would strike out nine Wayne County batters and only issue a pair of walks.

“She was on a roll,” said Woodall of his hurler. “She got stronger as the night went on, and had all of her pitches working tonight to keep the Wayne County hitters off balance. She didn’t just pitch a good game – she pitched a smart game.”

The middle of the line-up did most of the damage for Southwestern with Jasi Flynn continuing her hot streak, 6-6 in the tourney, by going 3-3 including a pair of doubles with a walk and a trio of runs scored while reaching base four times.

Kosmecki helped her own cause by going 2-4 at the plate with a double while scoring two runs of her own.

Chasidy Zimmerman would go 2-4 with an RBI while she scored a pair of runs to account for the rest of the runs on the board in the 7-0 victory.

Bethany Beatty not only turned in an excellent performance behind the plate with her normal hard work and hustle, but she would take care of business at the plate as well by delivering a 3-3 night with 2RBI.

“They’re awesome,” commented the Lady Warrior head coach on the middle of his line up. “Those four have come through, and are just crushing the ball right now. They are doing their job and doing it well.”

The big innings were the third and fifth for the Lady Warriors with a trio of runs scored in each including a two-out rally in the third frame that essentially put the game away as Southwestern took a 3-0 lead and never looked back.

With two away Flynn drew a walk while Kosmecki and Zimmerman followed with singles. Beatty, after Flynn scored on a wild pitch, ripped a 2-1 pitch from Chelsea Shoemaker up the middle for a two-RBI single.

The fifth inning began with a Flynn double into left center on the first pitch from a new hurler in the circle for Wayne County, Elizabeth Cowan, and Kosmecki reached on an error.

Zimmerman, with an RBI knock, and Beatty followed with singles. Kosmecki would score after the first baseman threw the ball away trying to get Zimmerman out at first where she would have beat the play anyway.

A sacrifice bunt from Megan Halcomb plated Zimmerman to give Southwestern a 6-0 lead going into the sixth stanza.

The Lady Warriors would add an insurance run in the sixth inning as Flynn, with two outs, reached on her third hit of the night this one being a hard shot past the short stop for a single.

A Kosmecki double down the right field line put Flynn on third base. Zimmerman would reach first on an error that plated Flynn, but Kosmecki would be thrown out at the plate to end the inning with the eventual final score of 7-0 in favor of the Lady Warriors.

Southwestern fast pitch will be the only district championship in the county as the Lady Warriors shut out both opponents to complete their sweep of the 48th district at 8-0 on the season with an overall mark of 18-14.

Zimmerman, Flynn, Kosmecki and Jessica Starnes were all named to the 48th district all-tournament team, and, along with the rest of the Lady Warriors, will head to the regional tournament in Danville on Monday. Their opponent will be announced today at 2pm.

“We still have a lot of ball left,” added Woodall. “Whoever we play (in the regional tournament) - we are going to be ready.”
