The Relay for Life celebration will culminate this Friday night at Somersport Park.

The American Cancer Society event themed “Go, Fight, Win, Beat Cancer” will begin at 6 p.m. with lots of activities throughout the night for those in attendance.

This year’s Relay for Life marks the tenth in Pulaski County’s history.

Margaret Merrick, community representative for the American Cancer Society, said the goal this year is for Pulaski County to raise $140,000 to go towards the fight to find a cure for cancer.

“We did that (raised $140,000) in 2003 and we’re hoping to get there again,” said Merrick.

People who would like to donate to their team can up until 2 a.m. Saturday morning. However, donations can be given to the American Cancer society all throughout the year and will count toward Relay for Life Pulaski County 2006.

There are 52 teams participating in Relay for Life this year.

“I’m pleased we have some new teams and everyone seems really excited,” said Merrick, noting the number of teams is up a little bit from last year.

Merrick said for the first time in the history of the relay there will be two stages instead of one for musical groups to perform throughout the night.

Also, for the first time, this year there was a Survivors’ Dinner held at The Center for Rural Development on Tuesday night with more than 200 cancer survivors present. At the event, Jeff Litton of Eagle Heights church performed for the crowd.

“We were thrilled with over 200 people,” said Merrick. “Hopefully it was an evening survivors could visit with old friends, meet new friends and gain support.”

Events during Relay for Life will include opening ceremonies at 6 p.m.

The money will go toward programs such as Reach to Recovery, I Can Cope, Man to Man, Hope Lodge, Look Good Feel Better, Cancer Education and Awareness and Research.
