If David Townsend has something he wants to say in a public forum this is how he will do it. I will not hide behind a screen name.
I believe that the majority of you leaving post on Topix concerning any Somerset Independent School Sports Program are doing a disservice to the children you claim to support and the programs themselves.
The athletes themselves are reading the garbage left there and it will create issues. Everyone going on there trying to guess who this is, or who that is. What do you think is going to happen when one of the kids accuse someone’s parent as saying something about him or her. At the very least it does not help them become better teammates.
There are five or six threads on there where things have been said negatively about our youth by some of our parents or supposed to be supporters.
So let me say it here publicly that I am a friend of Shawn and Kate Thacker, and I will continue to be. I will continue support him while at Rowan County and have all the confidence in the world that he will do an outstanding job. I also am a supporter of the Somerset Independent School District and the youth that attend that school. I have been since my employment began there in 1997 as a custodian.
I have had an ongoing relationship with the school district since that point.
I have also supported every coach that has been there since that time, at both the middle and high school. Make no mistake about it I do support Coach Daniel and what ever coaching style he brings to the program. Just as I supported Coach Perkins and then Coach Cobb, the two had different styles.
Just as I supported Coach Mason (another friend) and then Coach Brown, again the two had different styles.
I also support Coach Adkins, who also has a different style.
I could go on with this but I believe I have made my point. I want it to be known that I support all the kids, no matter their skill level or how much they may or may not contribute to their teams. They will learn more from the ups and downs of the games. The bumps and bruises that come along the way. The relationships they have with their coaches and teammates. And all the things that comes with competing and striving to be the best they can be.
Surely learn more those things than the lessons being taught by adults on Topix. The things that our youth will gain from their athletic experience and their subsequent success’s or failure’s will not be measured by the number of wins or losses of each season.
Just maybe it will be measured by the character of the individual that is built by being involved with a positive program. All this anonymous parental bickering on the public forums is certainly not good for the respect the kids have for the sports they play. I hope that the coaching staffs and administration can do something to try and curb this damaging activity of no-name negative postings.
