LONDON - Our Somerset Briar Jumpers pushed right through the North Laurel Jaguars to win a 41-0 blowout in North Laurel.
The stout Somerset defense got a quick three and out to put the ball in the offense's hands.
Sophomore quarterback Kaiya Sheron completed multiple short passes to get the ball to the three-yard line. Then Alex Miller ran it in for an easy touchdown. After a successful PAT the Jumpers took an early 7-0 lead.
After a second three and out by the Somerset defense, Sheron completed a big throw to senior receiver Payton Ellison to put the Briar Jumpers in Jaguar territory. Another completion to Alex Miller put the Jumpers in scoring position and Miller took it twelve yards for his second touchdown. After a failed point after attempt the Jumpers led 13-0 late in the first quarter.
Later in the middle second quarter, senior defensive back Treavor Brock got an interception to get Somerset back on the field.
The first play after the interception, Sheron threw up a deep ball to Ellison, who was wide open for a 39-yard touchdown pass. After the point after attempt, Somerset led 20-0.
Another scoreless drive for the Jaguars led them to punt the ball back to the Jumpers. Ellison took the punt back 65 yards for another Somerset touchdown. The return gave the Jumpers a 27-0 lead going into halftime.
Early in the third quarter another big connection between Sheron and Ellison put Somerset inside the North Laurel 10-yard line. Cam Austin punched it in foer the two-yard touchdown to add to the Jumpers lead and make the contest 34-0.
Somerset forced the Jaguars to punt after just three plays again and used a powerful two-headed attack with Miller and Jace Bruner to get the ball downfield. Bruner punctuated the drive with an eight-yard touchdown to give the game its final score of 41-0.
The running clock led the game to the end and the Briar Jumpers took their second 41-0 blowout victory of the year.
As always, the powerful Somerset defense dominated the Jaguar offense. The Jumper defense allowed only seven first downs all night. Defensive tackle Landon Fields led the charge and was in the North Laurel backfield all night.
Although the Briar Jumper defense controlled the game, Payton Ellison had a huge night too with 175 all-purpose yards (110 receiving, 65 returning) and two touchdowns.
Kaiya Sheron and Alex Miller also had good games on the offensive side of the ball. Sheron was 10-12 for 210 yards and a touchdown. Miller had 79 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
With the win, our Somerset Briar Jumpers will advance to 4-1. North Laurel fell to 3-2.
