Former Southwestern High School girls basketball coach Tim Rice was killed in a car wreck earlier this morning. Rice coached the Southwestern girls basketball team from 2004 to 2013.
Rice perished after a two-vehicle crash in Martin County. The crash happened Tuesday morning on New Route 3, near mile marker 3.
Reports stared an SUV rear-ended a cement truck. The Martin County coroner pronounced the driver of the SUV, Timothy Rice, 59, from Betsy Layne, dead at the scene.
After leaving Southwestern, Rice took over as the girls head basketball coach at Sheldon Clark, where he was currently employed at the time of his death.
During his nine seasons at Southwestern, Rice won four district titles, one region runner-up title and had eight winning seasons.
Rice led Sheldon Clark to the 15th Region championship game in 2015.
