It’s very uncommon for a sports team to have the chance to say that they have been undefeated for three years. Though chances are slim, Southwestern High School volleyball coach James Cox can easily brag about his undefeated Lady Warriors freshman volleyball team.

The freshman Lady Warriors traveled to Bowling Green, Ky. this past weekend to participate in the Bowling Green Purples’ annual freshman tournament. Eight teams from around the state gather once a year to prove themselves as having the best freshman team in the tournament. The orange and blue team from Somerset took home the first place trophy.

The Lady Warriors faced off against five different teams in order to make it to the top. Southwestern knocked off Central Hardin, Apollo, Green County, Warren East and the host team, Bowling Green Purples, with all matches only consisting of two games.

“We beat several teams that have well established programs,” Cox said.

Kelsey Roberts received the Most Valuable Player Award for the tournament. Amber Phelps had 15 assists and Mary Light led the team with 15 aces. Brittany Whitaker, Rachel Floyd, Kyra Tucker and Jenna Richards also contributed to the Warriors’ victories.

The Southwestern junior varsity team is also undefeated this season.

The Lady Warriors will be in action at home Monday, Sept. 25 as they face Casey County and travel to McCreary Central on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
