Student-athletes from all three local schools will be honored for their character on the playing field and in the classroom at the 2006 Society of Character banquet, which begins today at 1:30 p.m. at the Southwestern High School Auditorium.

The keynote speaker for this year’s event will be University of Kentucky football assistant coach Steve Ortmayer.

Each school will recognize one athlete from each sport, including cheerleading, dance team, pep band and ROTC Battalion.

Four years ago, the Pulaski schools systems began their version of the Society of Character inspired by a similar program at the University of Kentucky. Then, Somerset High School joined efforts with Pulaski schools to recognize high school student-athletes that not only excelled in athletics and academics, but more importantly, displayed outstanding character on and off the playing field.

The mission of the Society of Character is to recognize student-athletes who have achieved at a high level in all areas of their life.

Also, one athlete from each school will be awarded a scholarship by the Somerset -Pulaski County Rotary Club.

Last year, the three athletes awarded the $500 scholarship by the Somerset-Pulaski County Rotary for their outstanding character and leadership were Madison Flowers of Somerset High School, David Jones of Southwestern High School and Emily Pyland of Pulaski County High School.

Each inductee into today’s Society of Character will be awarded with a plaque for their achievement by their respective athletic director and principal.
