The Somerset Post 38 won the first game in the District 4 American Legion tourney on Wednesday by downing the defending state champs Campbellsville at Danville High School 25-20. The Post 38 squad put up 27 hits including 6 home runs, 3 by Brett Blankenship who knocked in 8 RBIs. Kirby Mayer had a 5 for 5 night with 2 RBIs as Josh Hamlin and Jordan Stumbo each added 4 hits. Stumbo hit a 3-run homer in the 8th inning to tie the game at 18-18.

In a see-saw affair Somerset went up 10-4 but Campbellsville came back to go up 17-10. The Post 38 team made their valiant comeback scoring one run in the 6th, 2 in the 7th, 5 in the 8th and 7 runs in the top of the 9th inning.

All of the Post 38 players had at least one hit as Blankenship hit a 3-run homer in the 5th inning, a 2-run homer in the 7th inning and the big blow, a 3-run homer in the 9th inning. Josh Popplewell added a solo home run as Chris Coffey led off the 9th inning with a solo home run. Coffey had 3 hits and 4 runs scored. Kyle Klingensmith had a big 2-run double in the 9 run 5th inning as Tyler Mayer followed with a RBI single. Robert Corder started the 8th inning off with a double and executed a sacrifice bunt in the 9th inning.

Matt McFarland got the win on the mound in relief of starter Stumbo who got chased in the 5th inning.

"It was a wild one," said coach Marty Mayer. "Our guys never quit and never got down, they stepped up and left it all on the field. We always have good games with Campbellsville, they beat us twice this summer by one run each time. We were due to win this one and this is when it is big in district play."

On Thursday the Post 38 squad dropped a tough one to Danville 12-8. Danville went up 6-2 in the 2nd inning and 12-3 in the 7th inning. Somerset battled with 4 runs in the 8th inning and 1 in the 9th. Nick Huckaby led the Post 38 offense with 5 hits, 2 singles, 2 doubles and a home run. Blankenship and Coffey each added 2 singles apiece as Popplewell and Hamlin each singled.

Corder started on the mound for Post 38 and was relieved by Lucas Henson.
