Pulaski County tennis teams edge out Southwestern

Pulaski County High School top-seeded singles player Jackson Martin makes a return during a recent match. Martin won his singles match on Tuesday at Southwestern High School.

The Pulaski County High School tennis teams pulled off two narrow wins over Southwestern High School on Tuesday night. The Maroons downed the Warriors 3-2 in both the boys and girls team tennis matches.

Pulaski County won all three girls singles match-ups. Emma Calfee downed Kaitlyn Munsey 8-2. Jamicyn Weaver downed Harlee Jordan 8-4, and Macey Hudson downed Mary Shaw 6-0.

However, the Lady Warriors swept the doubles matches. Angela Wilson and Terae Handlos downed Shaylin Estes and Morgan Rowe by a score of 8-1. Bethany Jordan and Paige Daniels downed Sydney Atwell and Lauren Worley by a score of 8-6.

The Pulaski County boys swept all three of their singles matches over the Warriors. Jackson Martin downed Camden Harris 8-1. Gavin Spradlin downed Clark Lemon 8-4, and Kasen Cundiff downed Josh Thomas 8-3.

In doubles, once agin, it was all Southwestern as the Warriors won both of the boys doubles matches. Josh Carey and Max Brainard downed Zach Carter and Ethan Carter by a score of 8-2. Luke Jacobs and Cameron Pierce downed Adam Reynolds and Haydan Williams by a score of 8-3.

"I was really happy to have our players come off Spring Break and get wins," Pulaski County tennis coach Chris Adkisson stated. "As a coach, it is sometimes nerve-wracking: Will they be rusty? Will they have a slow start? But our players were ready to compete!"

"Jackson Martin played another great match," Adkisson boasted. "He's had the shots to be successful for a year now, but he's been working hard on shot selection. When he's locked in, he has the potential to beat anybody in the region."

Southwestern will travel to Lincoln County on Thursday, April 11, while Pulaski County will host Somerset on Thursday, April 11.

On Mondy, the Southwestern High School tennis teams dropped a pair of matches to Wayne County High School. Both the Southwestern boys and girls teams by by an identical scores of 7-2.

In girls singles play, Southwestern's Kaitlyn Muncey won her top-seed match by a score of 6-1. The other Southwestern girls players fell in defeat. However, Tera Handlos lost her match in a tiebreaker score of 6-6 (3-7).

The Southwestern girls doubles team of Angela Wilson and Handlos won their match by a score of 6-3.

In boys singles play, won his match by a score of 6-4. Camden Harris was defeated in a tiebreaker score of 6-6 (8-6).

The Southwestern #1 seed boys doubles team of Josh Carey and Max Brainard won their match 6-3.
