BOWLING GREEN — It is without a doubt, the 2006 Southwestern volleyball team has had their most successful volleyball season in school history.

The Lady Warriors placed first in the McCreary Central Tournament and have knocked off region powerhouses Pulaski County and South Laurel.

It is obvious that the flame continued to burn as the Lady Warriors competed in the Bowling Green Purple’s Tournament in which they took home the second-place trophy in the sixteen-team tournament.

“This weekend, we really came to together as a team,” Southwestern coach James Cox said. “A couple of players were having off nights and we still found a way to win. Our bench was very helpful in getting the five wins this weekend.”

Southwestern easily won their pool by defeating Metcalf County, Ohio County and Glasgow. By winning their pool, the Lady Warriors moved to the championship bracket.

In round one of the championship bracket they defeated Allen-County Scottsville. In round two they defeated Edmonson County, which put them into the championship game versus Owensboro. The Lady Warriors lost the championship game 10-25, 24-26.

Sam Scott and Brooke Sexton took home all-tournament player awards. Brooke Flynn had 14 kills and Brooke Sexton had 30 assists. Courtney Compton had 22 aces, with eight of those coming in a single game versus Glasgow.

Southwestern travels to North Laurel on tonight in a district seed game and to Garrard on Thursday, Sept. 14.

The Lady Warriors have a record of 25-4 as they get prepared for the district tournament.
